OGEMAW COUNTY QUILT TRAIL: SELF GUIDED TOUR

Ogemaw County has a rich tradition of farming and quilting. In the early 1900s many Amish and Mennonite families from Indiana and Ohio came to farm the land after the lumbering companies had logged off the forests. The early settlers brought with them their tradition of being good farmers and their wives brought their family quilts. What better way to honor their sacrifices and struggles; their triumphs and tenacity than to commemorate them with quilt blocks on barns?

The West Branch Area Chamber of Commerce (WBACC), Ogemaw Genealogical and Historical Society (OG&HS) and the West Branch Creative Arts Association (WBCAA) is partnering up to make this project happen! One of our goals is to involve community groups, organizations, businesses and families and have quilt blocks in all of Ogemaw County.

“Quilt barn trails bring tourism and tourist dollars into the region, engage people in their communities, and promote local culture and history.” (Ohio University Impact Study) Through the efforts of the WBACC, WBCAA and OG&HS we are helping to preserve our heritage of old barns and outbuildings in Ogemaw County. Friends, neighbors and visitors to our area will explore the highways and back roads to see the Quilt Trail and to discover the beauty of Ogemaw County. Along the way they will eat, shop and spend time here.

Volunteer

We welcome volunteers at any level of commitment. No special skills are necessary. Our quilt blocks can be painted by volunteers from age 9 to 90! We welcome individuals, family groups, school groups, businesses, and organizations to join the fun! Contact us: 989-345-2821.

Donate

Our quilt blocks are paid for by the host family, a business or sponsor; additional blocks will be sponsored through grants as we receive them. Funds must be raised to support the Quilt Trail Guide, website, and special events on the Ogemaw County Quilt Trail. If you wish to help, please send a check to:
